Exposing PageRank

How to gain page rank

Understanding PageRank will help you to drive more activity to your web site. PageRank is the determinant which tells you how important your web page is to the most commonly used search engines, specifically Google. PageRank is determined by how many links are located on a page, which drives people to other web sites, along with the importance of the page which holds the links on it. The formulation is complicated but, simply, you want to have many web links on your web pages from high ranked web sites, this will up the PageRank of your own web pages. You want a high PageRank because it determines where your page comes up in Google when specific key words are searched.

Links

Understand that Google has the PageRank process down to a science. You can be penalized for using certain types of links. So, you want to make sure you are using legitimate links to legitimate sites. If you use links to anything generated by a link farm, Google will penalize you.

Calculations and Your Importance

The PageRank calculation is based on an algorithm developed at Stanford University, which determines exactly what the likelihood is of a person clicking to your page arbitrarily. The algorithm is known as a probability distribution and is entirely based on chance.

URL Names

When you are developing a web site, it is best to use URLs which will be easier for a person to randomly choose if they are looking for information on the subject covered on your web page. Take care to choose a URL which is directly connected to the contents of your web site and this will help to drive up your PageRank. For web sites with multiple pages, link the pages directly using the same URL address only with very slight modifications from the home page’s URL in the URL address bar. This will help to maintain very close PageRank for your entire site rather than having a significant disparity in the PageRank of each individual page within your site. If you don’t do this, what will happen is, when you add a new page with a unique URL, that page will be given a lower PageRank. You will then link that page to your homepage and the result will be a lowering of the PageRank of your homepage and all linked sites to your new page. Try to develop your whole site at one time to avoid PageRank disparity and, consequently, a lowering of the PageRank of your site.

Checking Rank

If you use the Google Toolbar, you will be able to see each web site’s PageRank. In the tool bar, the PageRank appears as a PR. The higher the rank following the PR, the higher your PageRank will be. Avoid and steer clear of PR0s. These sites have been determined to be cautionary and possibly dangerous to your system. You do not want links on your site to a PR0 and you do not want to visit a PR0.

As you develop your web site, take time to consider PageRank. Spend time closely examining the links you will have on your web page, including the PageRank of all of your affiliate links. If you do this, you will get your web site set up for success.
